In the region of Cappadocia, volcanic eruptions in the Erciyes, Hasan and Gullu mountains have formed a large plateau from volcanic tuffs. Together with the erosion of the Kyzylirmak River and the wind, chimney-like geological structures formed. Rocks and rock formations are marvels of nature. Cappadocia, which was the inhabited area of the Assyrian civilisation hosted Hittite, Phrygian, Persian, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman civilisations. The first Christians who escaped the persecution of the Roman Empire in the 2nd century AD came to Cappadocia through Antakya and Kayseri and settled here. These Christians founded underground cities in Cappadocia and hid in these underground cities whose gates were made in such a way that they could not be easily seen. The early Christians escaped from the persecution of the Roman soldiers. Because of this they had to live in the underground cities for long periods of time without being able to go outside. They developed these underground cities by building food halls, vents, places to make wine, churches, abbeys, wells, toilets and places to gather.
